The Abyss

After colliding with an unidentifiable object, a US nuclear submarine sinks 80 miles off the Cuban coast, to a depth of 600 meters and near the edge of a 7,500-meter abyss. As a hurricane, as well as Soviet and Cuban spy ships, approach the site of the incident, a rescue team comprising four Navy SEALs and specialists from an oil platform prepare to dive in order to save any survivors. James Cameron stages the descent, during which the crew discovers the unbelievable cause of the disaster, as an almost mystical experience. "Cameron's forceful entrance into sci-fi gave hope that there would be a serious revival of the genre in the early 1990s before the return to special effects stupidity became the order of the day in the wake of Independence Day.
